Sistema de informação Geográfica aplicado à ilha de São Jorge (Açores)

Abstract

Key-words: S. Jorge; Azores; Geographic Information System; Database. This work reports the development of a SIG applied to the island ofSt. Jorge, in the Azores, regarding its geology. The guidelines used in the building of the model allowed the development of tools that endeavor to address the present needs in terms of availability for the geology of volcanic islands. The graphic and attribute data used in this study regards stratigraphic, chronostratigraphic, tectonics and bibliographic data, essentially qualitative. Besides these, elements such as administrative organization, toponymy and hydrography of St. Jorge were also included as a complement to exemplify the potential ofthe system for analysing different kinds of data. The methodology used to produce the present SIG model was as follows: global conceptualization ofthe project; selection and processing of graphic and attribute data; conceptualization ofthe project according to the data; physical development, visualization and manipulation ofthe mode!.
